Herman Girls Home

Herman Girls Home supports girls who are placed in its care by the Department of Probation and Child Care Services. These are children deemed to be at risk or vulnerable, or who have often been victims of neglect or abuse.

Challenge

Many girls lack a safe home or environment in which to grow up, or to be provided with the care and nurture that they need to be able to succeed in education or life.

Solution

A children’s home that is monitored by the state authorities where girls are provided with a safe home, schooling, and the emotional and intellectual support needed to grow resilient in life and flourish. Where the children are also provided with pathways to higher education or vocational training on completion of their schooling, including: English studies, scholarships for university studies in Sri Lanka or India.

Long-Term Impact

Herman Girls Home has helped to care for dozens of children since the 2000s. In recent years one graduate has become a school teacher, another completed an undergraduate degree at Peradeniya and is now doing her Masters in India. Another student is currently doing her undergraduate degree in India and several students are waiting to go to college in India in 2020.
